Supply Chain Sustainability and Efficiency

Responsible : POM West Flanders

A collaboration between the lead beneficiary, POM West Flanders, and Region Västra Götaland providing a strong partnership to direct and manage the transnational activities which will provide concrete outcomes for the project. This project activity is split into two focuses:

  • The implementation of green transport corridors for food products through business cases for freight consolidation.
  • Clustering of food logistic activities. All regions will work together within this activity.

The realisation of green transport corridors for food products involves transnational collaboration by matching the food product flows between the different regions and searching e.g. for return cargo. For example Norway exports large quantities of fish to the continent and needs return cargo to make a potential short sea shipping connection more profitable. The flow of fish from Norway could be matched with the export of frozen vegetables from West Flanders. For each potential green corridor for food product flows, a concrete business case will be calculated and a modal shift pilot will be implemented. Most of these corridors will be transnational (port - port), some of them regional (port - hinterland).
The activity concerning clustering of food logistic activities will lead to the detection and realisation of new food hubs and strengthening of existing ones. The different (potential) food hubs will be included in a transnational logistic network between the different regions. All partner regions will work closely together to further shape this transnational food logistic network.

Relation to Food Port project objectives

  • Creation of new partnerships for collaboration in food and logistics.
  • Improvement of accessibility between the partner regions.
  • Putting into practice modal shift.
  • Realisation of green transport corridors for food products.
